History

Royal 1 Radio was the idea of a visitor who was attending the hospital to see his mum, a patient at the time. It was started in 1995 by a group of keen volunteers including a nurse, other hospital employees and some people involved in entertainment. The station has served the patients and staff of the hospital for over a decade!

The station is run entirely by volunteers and funded by kind donations and events throughout the year. Coming from all walks of life, from accountants to housewives, students to broadcasting professionals, we pride ourselves on reflecting a wide cross-section of the surrounding community.

It's the mix of people that allows us to entertain listeners of all ages. We aim to provide light hearted relief to the patients ans staff of our hospital and local community. Our volunteers get the opportunity to carry out ward visits on occasion to collect requests and speak to the listeners face to face. This is not only welcomed by patients and staff but enlightening as a volunteer.

We also hold events throught the year to finance our charity. Some volunteers host specialist music shows on the likes of folk and classical music while others take requests. One of our presenters even recites self-written poetry!

Our feed goes out on a hard wired system at the moment, although we are always aiming to improve our service. We use mini-disc, cd and even vinyl to play music!

Our answering machine is on 24 hours a day.
